A commercial chest freezer expands the amount of frozen food storage space in a commercial setting. They are designed to provide the largest volume of storage in relation to their external dimensions compared to any other type of freezer. In order to achieve this result, most models will contain minimal compartmentalisation and offer an open box orientation with a vertical opening lid. Chest freezers are available in a range of sizes, generally falling between 100 - 500 litres.

The purpose of this type of freezer is to keep large amounts of food products that do not intend to be used right away from spoiling. Unlike a glass door display fridge, the freezer remains at a constant temperature (generally -18 °C) for an extended period of time by utilising powerful, commercial-grade compressors. These compressors are durable in design and maintain a consistent temperature throughout the cooling unit, regardless if the door is opened frequently.

Commercial chest freezers are traditionally used in the restaurant industry as well as by hotels, coffee shops and storefronts. However, their use is becoming more popular for private homes due to their storage capacity and robust nature.

Commercial chest freezers are available in a range of sizes and colours and are equipped with features such as an internal temperature display, interior lighting, and locking lids.
