Australia's accommodation industry will benefit from the freeze in the passenger movement charge (PMC), according to a peak body.

The Accommodation Association of Australia (AAA) said it is pleased the new federal government has honoured an election commitment to do this and accommodation operators are set to benefit from it.

"The accommodation industry welcomes the decision by the Abbott government to maintain the PMC at its current level for the next three years," said the association's chief executive officer, Richard Munro.

"It's no secret that many of the policies of the Rudd-Gillard governments created additional costs for tourism and accommodation businesses, including increases to the PMC, the introduction of the carbon tax and changes to workplace relations laws.

"Freezing the PMC has the potential to lift international visitor numbers, providing a shot in the arm for hotels, motels, serviced apartments and other accommodation businesses."

Munro said that by making this announcement, the new Minister responsible for tourism, the Minister for Trade and Investment, Andrew Robb, has shown that the government's pledge that Australia is 'open for business' again applies to tourism businesses.

"Once sittings for the new parliament commence, the accommodation industry looks forward to bringing other measures which will reduce red tape in our sector to the attention of Minister Robb and other relevant ministers," Munro said.
