The NSW government's Name and Shame register marks five years of operation with more than 8.5 million hits on the popular website, according to primary industries minister Katrina Hodgkinson.

"Over that time more than four thousand businesses have appeared on the register," Hodgkinson said.

"I am pleased the vast majority of the hard working food business owners do the right thing.

"Fewer than two per cent of retail food service businesses, and licensed food production and processing facilities across NSW were placed on the register in 2012-13.

"Those that break food safety rules not only pay the price but feature on the Government's Name and Shame register.

"The register is designed to keep consumers informed and identify organisations that are not safely handling food, and continue to not comply.

"The register has proven to be an effective compliance tool. In 2009/10, at its peak, 3.4 per cent of businesses were placed on the Name and Shame register.

"This 5 year milestone is an important reminder of the protection offered to NSW consumers.

"Our customers are safeguarded by the most robust food regulations in the nation.

"The NSW Liberals and Nationals government has delivered on its promise to give consumers easily accessible and transparent information about the performance of food outlets.

"I would also like to acknowledge the role local Councils play in inspecting, educating and informing food retail businesses and congratulate them for their ongoing efforts.

"Another initiative of the NSW government is the Scores on Doors program which is an effective tool showcasing businesses adhering to the rules by displaying their food safety rating in their premises and allowing them to promote their compliance to consumers."
