"The new Singapore Airlines international service to Canberra will provide a huge boost for tourism, trade and investment in the region".

Singapore Airlines' decision to begin flights between Singapore, Canberra and Wellington is a major milestone for Australian aviation services, the Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said on 20 January 2016.

Truss welcomed the new service and congratulated Singapore Airlines and Canberra Airport on this initiative during an event at Canberra Airport to announce the new flights.

From September this year, Singapore Airlines will operate its Singapore-Canberra-Wellington return service four times per week.

"It is high time that Australia's capital has a regular international air link," Truss said.

"Canberra Airport has made great progress over recent years but this is a quantum-leap in its development.

"Singapore Airlines' new service will create important benefits for more than 900,000 people in the Australian Capital Territory and its surrounding regions in NSW."

Senator Richard Colbeck, Minister for Tourism and International Education and the Minister Assisting the Minister for Trade and Investment emphasised that the new service builds on and extends the long standing economic, security and people-to-people connections between the three countries.

"Air connectivity plays an important role in facilitating people and business linkages. The new Singapore Airlines international service to Canberra will provide a huge boost for tourism, trade and investment in the region," Senator Colbeck said

"In the year ending September 2015, Australia welcomed 334,000 visitors from Singapore. In the same period 1.2 million visitors travelled to Australia from New Zealand.

"The announcement of a new Canberra service comes after Singapore Airlines' recent commitment to an additional three flights each week to Brisbane from late May.

"The additional capacity supports the Government's Tourism 2020 strategy by facilitating greater visitors from Singapore and New Zealand and improving access to Singapore Airlines' global network, including connections to key visitor and trade markets across Europe and Asia."

Both Ministers congratulated the ACT Government, Canberra Airport and Singapore Airlines for the initiative and effort involved in establishing the new service.

Truss said that the new links "are a major advance for Australia, New Zealand and Singapore that will deliver far-reaching benefits into the future."
