People spend about a third of their lives sleeping, so investing in good quality mattresses and bedding is a good idea if we want the most restful sleep possible.
Many of us take our mattresses for granted and don’t think about the care and maintenance of our beds beyond washing the sheets. But being mindful of mattress care and protection can improve our sleep and even lengthen the life of our mattress. Using bedding products like mattress covers and toppers can cut down the wear and tear of your mattress, on allergens, and make sleeping more comfortable.
Easy mattress maintenance
Flipping and rotating your mattress is a good idea to prevent body impressions and sagging in your mattress.
Mattress makers suggest flipping and rotating your mattress every two weeks for new beds during the first three to four months, then once every quarter after that.
You can see an illustration of how to flip your mattress here.
Manufacturers suggest ongoing maintenance for the five to 10 years you may own your mattress, including regular vacuuming to suck up dust and dust mites. To periodically freshen your mattress and absorb odours, try sprinkling baking soda onto the bare mattress surface, wait 15 minutes and vacuum. If you have a window in your bedroom, open the curtains to allow sunlight to naturally disinfect your mattress when possible.
Linen products help extend mattress life
You’ve already invested in a mattress for a better sleep, so protecting it with readymade linen is an excellent idea for your health and your comfort.
Using a fitted cover protects your mattress and is much easier to maintain than going to the trouble of cleaning your whole mattress. A washable, breathable cotton cover will keep your bed clean and protected, and also helps keep you cool on a warm night.
Mattress toppers give an added layer of luxurious comfort and further protection for your sleeping investment. The Hilton mattress topper offers an extra 10cm of soft plush support to your bed and has anti-microbial and hypo-allergenic properties – great for people who suffer from dust allergies. It is suggested that the covers and protectors are washed every four to six weeks – follow the manufacturer’s washing instructions on your product of choice.
