Do you keep one eye on hospitality developments across the world? It sure pays to these days as the industry is now evolving almost as fast as technology.

Sadly the days when families sat across the desk from a travel agent and planned their trip are largely a quaint memory. And far too many of us wouldn't think of walking into an unknown restaurant before checking its online reviews first. None of it is pretty, but it's reality. So here are a few international trends worth watching and, if you're proactive, implementing.

Wellness is alive and well

Believe it or not we humans are becoming very health conscious even if a quick walk down any city street might suggest otherwise. But apparently we are, and this is reflecting in our hospitality choices. If you're a restaurant, you'd be advised to get some organic, sustainable produce on your menu. If you're a hotel, you might want to invest in a fitness centre, swimming pool or spa, or all three. If you want to go even further, in-room exercise spaces are catching on as is, ahem, vitamin-infused shower water. No, I'm not kidding.

Mobil technology is taking off

Most diners and travellers are now technologically plugged in and your business needs to be too. If you have an online presence – and you definitely should – make sure it's mobile compatible as that's where most of your potential customers will find you. Also plug into as many service-based apps as you can; anything that adds to your image and appeal and makes bookings, check-ins and other services easy to access remotely.

Environmental is incremental

In other words any green additions you make will only be good for business. Organic and sustainable produce are now sought by a more discerning customer base. And hotels using solar energy and power-saving technology are winning new business with environmentally aware customers.

Hotel staff are no longer staff

Well, they are, but with travellers now doing most of the basic administration of their booking electronically, staff are being freed up to take more personal, up close and friendly roles with guests. If your staff have less nuts and bolts work to do, think of ways they can enhance the guest experience without getting too in their face.
