The Callinan report released by the State Government appears to take a few small steps in the right direction, AHA NSW Director of Liquor and Policing John Green said.

"The recommendation to return one of the two hours removed from take-away sales is a step in the right direction, but we are still at a loss to understand why it was wound back state-wide in the first place," he said.

Green said NSW pubs host over 63,000 nights of live music each year and he welcomed the recommendation to relax the lockout slightly for city venues with live music – even if it is only by 30 minutes.

The Association was disappointed there had been no recommendation to remove the blanket 1.30am lockout measures.

"We don't support blanket measures that unfairly penalise many safe, well-run venues with a proven track record of compliance." Green said.

Green was also disappointed there was no recommendation to replicate the success of the current Newtown 'no new patrons after 3.00am' policy.

"Following its introduction Newtown has seen a 56.9% reduction in assaults since last year, This shows what can be done when industry, government, police and community all work together." he said.

The AHA NSW will now consider the report in detail.
