Celebrity chef Pete Evans' recent comments about water fluoridation have riled health lobby groups, with Australian Medical Association (AMA) Victorian president Dr Tony Bartone saying his views "devalued" medicine.

Evans recently said he didn't touch Australian tap water – instead opting for "alkalised water" – and was in talks with anti-fluoride advocate group Fluoride Free to throw some ideas around.

"If you look at the number of countries who have reversed their fluoridation programs, it really raises alarm bells," Evans recently told reporters, referring to countries including Greece and Israel.

"Fluoride in the water hasn't always been there and we're no better off now than when it wasn't."

Scientific evidence

Dr Bartone said scientific evidence had shown fluoride was a cheap and beneficial way to reduce cavities. He said it was a shame Evans had come out with such a view as such comments from celebrities had a tendency to "hold extra weight in society".

"It enrages me when celebrities like Peter Evans disregard and devalue medicine and can have potentially serious consequences for members of the public who follow these words," Dr Bartone said.

AMA WA president Dr Michael Bannon also rejected Evans' anti-flouride comments, saying water fluoridation had the "full backing" of the Australian Dental Association and the AMA.

"Pete Evans is a good chef but he doesn't have the scientific background to comment on this," Gannon said.
