Academic challenges Australia's commercial tea history

Far north Queensland's claim to being the home of Australia's first commercial tea plantations may be under threat, according to a recent ABC Rural report on the story that's been written and re-written into the pages of history.

In 1882, the Cutten brothers rowed a boat down the Tully River and started growing tea and coffee near Bingil Bay, in the Innisfail district.

But now senior lecturer Peter Giggs claims it was tea merchant James Griffiths who, in 1901, advertised in newspapers in Melbourne and Adelaide, the sale of 'Australian-grown tea' from his own property.
